The competition aims to reframe how ageing and older people are portrayed in Ireland and Northern Ireland and is now open for entries until 1 October, which coincides with International Day for Older Persons.

Under the theme of ‘Working, Learning, and Volunteering in Later Life,’ IPH is seeking images that showcase older adults in various roles, including:

  • Working: All forms of work, paid or unpaid.
  • Learning: Engaged in lifelong, teaching, or being taught.
  • Volunteering: Contributing to society both formally and informally.

The competition will help IPH to build its How We Age image gallery, which is used to promote healthy ageing and broader public health themes and is also available to partner and allied organisations as a free-to-access image resource.

For further details on how to enter, please visit: www.publichealth.ie/photo.

Submission Guidelines:

Under the theme How We Age: Working, learning, and volunteering in later life, we encourage photographers to capture how older adults engage with and contribute to their communities through work, lifelong learning, or volunteering.

Photographs can feature an older individual, couple, or group engaging in these activities. Images may reflect everyday situations that showcase the real lives of older people, whether indoors or outdoors.

Here are some examples which may be helpful:

  • Older adults in the workplace – including all forms of work, part-time, full-time, paid, and unpaid.
  • Older adults using digital technology – such as online learning, both formal and informal.
  • Older adults volunteering in the community – including community, social, and charity initiatives.
  • Older adults teaching or coaching – whether it’s sports, physical activities, arts, cooking, etc.
  • Older adults caring for others – such as caring for grandchildren, family members, or loved ones.
