Dementia Understand Together June Update
  • September is Word Alzheimer Month with the theme for this year “Time to act on dementia, Time to act on Alzheimer’s. 
  • Community Activities
  • Cork: Charleville. Join local champions for a upcoming dementia inclusive community event in Charleville on 25th September from 6.30-9.00pm in Charleville Park Hotel with a number of guest speakers  including Charlie Drake, person living with Dementia, speaking on the lived experience, Amy Murphy, Dementia Advisor, Kevin Quaid will speak on Dementia Inclusive communities in addition to other speakers.
  • Leitrim: Mohill  -A Dementia Inclusive Communities Information evening will take place in September 2024, with guest speakers.
  • Cavan: The Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland will be holding a pop-up Alzheimer Café in Belturbet on Monday 16th September from 11am-1pm. This information event will provide information and advice and include a talk on Brain Health, it would be great to see support from local healthcare and social care staff as part of plans to develop Cavan as a Dementia Inclusive County. ASI Mobile Information Unit

The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Mobile Information Service travels through towns, villages and cities to provide information and support to people with dementia and their families as well as those concerned about their cognitive health. Once on location, be it in a shopping centre car park or participating in a larger organised event in your area, the service can help: 

  • raise awareness about local ASI services and about dementia,
  • distribute leaflets to people passing-by,
  • invite people on-board to view information and resources; and
  • facilitate private one-to-one conversation on-board.

RTE Today Show 2024

Watch the recent ‘Meet the Medical Expert’ features on RTÉ’s Today Show where the HSE’s National Dementia Services Clinical Lead, Dr Seán O’Dowd and Dr Rónán O’Caoimh, Consultant Geriatrician at MUH discuss the importance of social inclusion for people with dementia, changes we can all make to help reduce the risk of developing dementia and improve our brain health.

As well as raising awareness for dementia and brain health, the interviews highlighted the many positive actions community champions and partners are taking across the country and use of the national dementia inclusive community symbol as a sign of solidarity.

  • Partner activities – OPW

The OPW developed Dementia Inclusive resources: For persons with dementia, their family, friends, carers and supporters. The collection offers cues and threads for engagement with visual art, museum objects and architecture. They can also be used for other conditions, such as stroke or aphasia.
