Study on Mayo nursing homes, looking at universal design recommendations for residential care.

Student researchers in Trinity College are currently involved in a study on nursing homes, looking at universal design recommendations for residential care.

St Brendan’s Village (Mulranny, Mayo) agreed to participate in the research as a case study.  The team from Trinity carried out research with the residents, staff and family members and assessed the inside of the building.

Mayo Older People’s Council assisted in this research by conducting a walkability audit and assessed the approach to the nursing home and external environment.  The overall experience was satisfactory, however some of the main issue’s highlighted on the day were:

  • More seating (age friendly) required along distance from ST. Brendans to Doherty’s shop.
  • Bus timetables
  • Bus shelter
  • Uneven surfaces

Thanks to the Mayo Older People’s Council members for participating and to Grace (student) for taking the photographs.
