The Mayor of the County of Cork, Cllr. Joe Carroll, performed the official opening of 13 Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS) funded housing units for Older Persons at Charleville Sheltered Housing Services, Love Lane, Charleville.

This development consists of a scheme undertaken in partnership between Cork County Council and the Approved Housing Body – Charleville Care Project. Cork County Council was the sanctioning authority for the project and assisted in securing funding to the value of €2.8 million from the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage through the Capital Assistance Scheme (CAS).

In welcoming the development, Mayor Carroll commended Charleville Care Project for their ongoing response to the needs of the individual residents promoting their overall welfare and independence”.
“I am grateful for the hard work and dedication of Charleville Care Project and Cork County Council, as well as the support of the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government. Charleville Care Project has been providing the combination of housing and care supports to enable people to age in their own home since 1991, with these 13 new units now bringing their overall number of houses in the retirement village setting to 41.

Chairperson of Charleville Sheltered Housing Services, John O’Donnell, commented “Today is a red-letter day at Charleville Sheltered Housing in the final build programme and official opening of 13 new residential homes. We feel very proud of all our achievements over the past 36 years, proudly led by our visionary Sr. Celestine as our Co Ordinator and our Manager, Margaret Farrissey. Let us pay a special word of thanks to all the management and staff of Cork County Council Housing Dept under the management of Maurice Manning, Director of Service, for their continuous help, support and encouragement at all times. We thank all architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, builders and skillsets at all levels for producing quality homes which have enhanced our town and our location. All involved feel very proud and thanks to all.”

2024 saw the delivery of 493 new housing units under the Government’s Housing for All Programme by Cork County Council and its Approved Housing Body partners. A similar figure is anticipated for 2025.
