Age Friendly Laois

The third edition of Laois Live Well Expo was hosted on Wednesday, 23rd April in Portlaoise College.

This amazing expo was launched by Anna May McHugh, Laois Age Friendly Ambassador and it was attended by over 2,000 people.

HSE screened around 200 people for blood pressure and sugars and referred those with high reading to see their GPs. In addition Hidden Hearing has seen more than 100 people for hearing screening, and the Q111aq¹ Ireland brought their test equipment too and they have tested 50 peoples eyesight on the day.

The Irish Heart Foundation van was also at the Expo and they had 15 minute slots for people who visited their area. They had a questionnaire , blood pressure and pulse readings to test heart health. They advised people on caring for your heart in the future. 

All health screenings were free and saw a combined total of almost 400  screenings performed.

The new activity zone was a hit too and Laois Sports Partnership tutors and coaches put people through their paces on the Astro Turf at Portlaoise College and having been active, participants were then wound down by Margaret from Bee-ing Me Mindfully.

On the main stage , where Laois’ STEM Officer Seanie Morris was Master of ceremonies, the varied mix of technology , health and Climate talks were well received.

Dr. Joe Tierney of Technological University of the Shannon Athlone spoke of Active aging and remaining connected as we age. This theme of the importance of physical activity as we age was also highlighted by Consultant in Orthopaedics Mr Ian Kelly and Dr Michael Ryan of UPMC Hospital Group.

Google advised the audience of the apps that that help them on their personal devices.

After the interval there were panel discussions on planning ahead with the Decision Support Service’ Patsy Fitzsimons and AIB’s James. Stanton, followed by a panel discussion on  Health literacy featuring HSE and Loetb staff.

Climate and gardening conversations were the  next panel and attendees were made aware of funding streams and supports available for climate projects. The benefits of gardening were highlighted by the gardeners of O Moore Place allotments.

Before entertainment by Dickie Donnelly started and after a busy day, guests were treated to a mindful wind down. 

The main Expo Hall was busy all day and the 100 plus exhibitors were  on hand to advise, discuss and follow up with people with many people availing of the mini Library area to sit down, read the daily papers and relax.

Live Well ‘ s host venue Portlaoise College supported this community Health and Well being event as ever by allowing organisers to use their wonderful facilities on the day.

This event is made possible by exhibitors, speakers, helpers, volunteers provided by Laois Volunteer Centre all giving of their time and resources freely to support being healthy, well and connected in Laois.
