The Galway Age Friendly Programme has been in place since 2011 and is jointly hosted by Galway City and County Councils. The Programme has an Age Friendly Alliance comprising representatives from the local authorities, HSE, An Garda Síochána, GRETB, University of Galway, Galway Sports Partnership, and many other community & voluntary Organisations who offer supports and services to older people.

The voice of older people is represented by members from both the City & County Older Persons Councils. The Age Friendly Alliance oversee a work programme across the World Health Organisation Themes – some of the project and activities progressed through the Older Peoples Council and Age Friendly Alliance:

  • Programme of activities for Bealtaine Festival
  • Local Heroes Exhibition and other events to promote Positive Ageing Week
  • A range of grants and other funding for accessibility and age friendly measures
  • Collaboration with other agencies to deliver initiatives for Older People to keep well and stay connected during COVID-19
  • Collaboration with other agencies to deliver events and activities throughout the City & County
