Cavan Older People’s Council in collaboration with Cavan Age Friendly Programme hosted an Information Roadshow in Cavan County Museum, Ballyjamesduff on Tuesday 9th June 2026. The event was open to older people from across the county and was free to attend.
The Roadshow was opened by joint chair of Cavan Older People’s Council Brian McDermott who welcomed everyone and gave a quick overview of Cavan Older People’s Council Attendees then heard presentations on various topics including Crime Prevention (An Garda Síochána), Cavan Sports Partnership (Cavan County Council), Frailty Prevention (HSE), the Healthy Age Friendly Homes Programme.

The large audience were treated to a poetry reading by Cavan Older People’s Council members Ann O’Donoughue, Brian McDermott and Bob Gilbert (Cavan’s Age Friendly Ambassador) who read a selection of their poems written as part of the ‘Pen the Pain’ project. The project was facilitated by Helen Keenan under the ‘Art of Life’ Creative Ireland, Creative Cavan Shared Island funded initiative which resulted in a poetry book being written and published which is now included in death positive libraries in Cavan and in Fermanagh and Omagh and is freely available on BorrowBox.
The event concluded with a taster tour of Cavan County Museum which is celebrating it’s 30th anniversary on the 22nd June 2026 and attendees had the opportunity to learn more about some of the fabulous exhibits and were especially delighted to be among the first to see one of Cavan’s most iconic historical artefacts, the Virginia brooch, which has recently returned home on loan from the National Museum of Ireland as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations.
There were a host of local agencies and service providers in attendance and there was lots of opportunity for those present to get information on topics of interest to them.
Deirdre Donnelly, Age Friendly Programme Manager for Cavan County Council informed attendees that the AGM of Cavan Older People’s Council will be taking place on 7th October and that elections would take place at that event to select members for the next two-year term for the Executive Committee of Cavan Older People’s Council. She thanked the current members of the OPC Executive Committee and her team in Age Friendly for their assistance with organising the information roadshow and other Age Friendly events.
The event ended with a raffle and lunch. It was encouraging to see so many older people attend the event which was the first Cavan Older People’s Roadshow to take place in Ballyjamesduff and it led to some new members joining the Older People’s Council. Information on the AGM on 7th October will be circulated in due course.
