As part of their Transition Year programme, students from Coláiste na Sceilge led an initiative aimed at tackling IT poverty among older people in South Kerry. The project focused on younger participants training older adults to use smartphones and tablets, enhancing digital connectivity and inclusivity within the community. In collaboration with key partners like HSE, KDYS, Kerry Age Friendly programme, Men’s Shed, and Cahersiveen Social Services, the project successfully brought together a diverse group of older individuals, helping them gain essential digital skills while fostering intergenerational relationships.
By bridging the digital divide, the initiative promoted well-being and inclusion for all ages, highlighting the power of community collaboration. The project was among the 26 shortlisted for the National Age Friendly Achievement Awards 2023, where it earned the prestigious Judges’ Special Recognition Award. It was also shortlisted for the Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards 2024, further underscoring its impact and success.
