World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is observed annually on June 15th to raise awareness about the issue of elder abuse and neglect. It provides an opportunity for communities to promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older adults, emphasizing the impact of elder abuse on individuals and society. In recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council Cllr John Paul Feeley joined Age Friendly Ambassador Bob Gilbert, Co-chair of Cavan Older People’s Council Brian McDermott, fellow elected representatives, Cavan County Council staff and members of Cavan Age Friendly Alliance and Cavan Older People’s Council at Courthouse Cavan last week to do help draw attention to this serious issue

June 15th was World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, and this year’s campaign focuses on the abuse of older adults in long-term care facilities, with a recent WHO study revealing that nearly 64% of institutional staff admitted to abusive behaviour in the previous year, highlighting the urgent need for systemic change.

County Cavan’s Age Friendly Ambassador Bob Gilbert says the key to eliminating this heinous crime is through education and awareness-raising.

“For too long, silence has given succour to abusers. Let us start the conversation now and keep it going until this evil has been eliminated from our society. Let us start now, for tomorrow may be too late.”

Cathaoirleach of Cavan County Council Cllr John Paul Feeley echoed Mr Gilbert’s message, stating: “Let’s make sure our older people are seen, valued, and protected. By raising awareness of elder abuse, we can break the silence and create a society where every older person lives with dignity and respect.”

Safeguarding Ireland encourages people to report any safeguarding concerns. If you have a concern about abuse, neglect or coercion – respond and report it. If there is an immediate or serious risk of harm – call the Gardaí at 999 or 112.
