Public sector including military and emergency services retirement age rises from 60 to 62

Minister O’Brien has announced on Monday, 19th August the extension of the retirement age for firefighters effective from 19th August.

Minister O’Brien – ‘It will allow the retention of long serving personnel and provide an opportunity for the knowledge and expertise of existing experienced personnel to transfer to new recruits.’

Meanwhile Tánaiste Micheál Martin has announced that the mandatory retirement age for members of the Irish Defence Forces as well of the emergency services and Prison services has risen from 60 to 62 years old as of Monday, 19th August.

“This important change to the mandatory retirement age reflects modern society, allowing members who want to remain in service longer to do so,” Martin said.
