Description
Visual Carlow is a leading contemporary arts centre in the southeast of Ireland. Over the past number of years, it has developed a pioneering approach to engaging older people through a series of age-friendly programmes that support creativity, wellbeing, and social connection.
Key initiatives include:
• Sláinte Maith: A wellbeing programme focusing on art, movement, and mindfulness. This multi-week programme includes gentle activities that enhance mental health, coordination, and emotional expression through guided artistic exploration.
• Have a Gawk: A sociable gallery tour and discussion programme for older people, encouraging casual conversation around contemporary art in an inclusive and non-judgemental space. It facilitates cognitive stimulation and community bonding.
• Sing Sync: A group singing programme designed to lift spirits, promote deep breathing, and foster joy and connection through music. Sessions are inclusive and supportive, with no prior singing experience needed.
• Yoga in the Gallery: A gentle yoga programme held in the gallery space, designed specifically for older people. It promotes physical health and mindfulness in a calm, inspiring environment surrounded by art.
These programmes are delivered in close collaboration with Carlow Age Friendly Programme, Carlow OPC, the HSE, and other local partners. Visual’s commitment to accessibility is reflected in their provision of free or low-cost entry, transportation supports when needed, and facilitation by trained, compassionate practitioners.
Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many citing improved mental wellbeing, reduced feelings of isolation, and a stronger connection to the local community. By embedding age-friendliness into its organisational ethos, Visual has transformed its role from an arts venue to a hub of holistic community wellbeing.

Ultimately, the aim is to place creativity and connection at the heart of healthy ageing in Carlow.
