Shankill Day Care Centre exemplifies a holistic approach to fostering an age-friendly environment, enhancing the lives of older adults through service, community engagement, and cultural enrichment. This initiative is designed to support the well-being, social inclusion, and active participation of older adults in our community. By leveraging the skills, passions, and experiences of older adult volunteers, we create a vibrant, supportive atmosphere where older adults thrive.
The older volunteers in the day centre engage the clients in various activities, including hosting word games and leading dance therapy sessions. Their involvement enriches the day centre experience, fostering social interaction, mental stimulation, and physical activity, enhancing the wellbeing of all participants.
The Meals on Wheels program is a cornerstone of our initiative, providing essential nutrition and companionship to homebound and vulnerable older adults. Our service ensures that clients receive balanced, healthy meals daily, addressing both their dietary needs and social isolation. The program’s success is deeply rooted in the commitment of our older adult volunteer drivers. These volunteers, many of whom are retirees, deliver meals with care and compassion. Their contributions go beyond simply delivering food; they offer a friendly face, a listening ear, and a brief but meaningful interaction that brightens the day of our clients. These volunteers perform informal wellness checks, alerting the centre to any concerns about a client’s health or living conditions. This dual role of nourishment and social connection is critical in maintaining the health and well-being of our clients.

Monthly Book Sale: The monthly book sale is another pivotal aspect of our initiative, organised and operated by a dedicated group of older adult volunteers. This group shares a love for literature and community service, curating a diverse selection of books that cater to all tastes. The book sale not only generates vital funds for the centre, supporting our various programs and services, but also fosters a sense of community and engagement. The book sale event transforms the centre into a bustling hub of activity, where people of all ages gather to browse, buy, and discuss books. It provides an opportunity for older adults to engage in meaningful work, utilising their organisational skills, customer service abilities, and literary knowledge. The sense of purpose and accomplishment derived from running the book sale significantly enhances the volunteers’ sense of well-being and community involvement.
Musical Engagement:
We are fortunate to have a group of talented older adult musicians who volunteer their time to perform at the centre. These musicians, bring a wealth of experience and passion for music, play a variety of genres, from traditional Irish music to contemporary tunes. Their performances create an uplifting atmosphere, encouraging clients to participate by singing along, dancing, or simply enjoying the melodies. This program not only provides entertainment but also fosters social interaction and emotional expression.
Shankill Day Care Centre and Meals on Wheels program are shining examples of how an age-friendly initiative can transform lives and communities. By leveraging the talents and contributions of older adult volunteers, we provide essential services, foster social connections, and create a vibrant, supportive environment. Our comprehensive approach addresses the diverse needs of older adults, ensuring they remain active, engaged, and valued members of our community.
This application highlights our commitment to promoting well-being and social inclusion for older adults, demonstrating why Shankill Day Care Centre and Meals on Wheels deserve national recognition and achievement as already been recognised by Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council as winners of the Age Friendly category for Community and Volunteer Awards 2024.

Aim of Initiative

To Enhanced Social Connections by engaging older adults as day centre clients, volunteers and performers, we create opportunities for social interaction and mutual support, helping to combat loneliness and social isolation. Volunteering offers older adults a renewed sense of purpose and fulfilment. Whether they are delivering meals, organising book sales, or performing music for our day centre clients, they contribute meaningfully to the community, boosting their self-esteem and life satisfaction.

Who is it aimed at

Older people in the community.

3 Steps critical to success

  1. Community Engagement

We foster a strong, supportive network within the community that values and includes older adults.
Through outreach and awareness, we actively promote our services through local media, community events, and partnerships with other organisations. This increases awareness of our programs and highlights the benefits of involvement for both clients and volunteers.
By building strategic partnerships with local businesses, healthcare providers, and educational institutions helps extend our reach and resources. These partnerships provide additional support, whether through sponsorships, collaborative events, or resource sharing.
With feedback mechanisms, we regularly seek feedback from clients, volunteers, and community members to understand their needs and improve our services. This is done through surveys, focus groups, and informal conversations. Incorporating community feedback ensures our programs remain relevant and effective.
Engaging the community helps build a robust support system, encourages volunteerism, and ensures the sustainability of our programs. It also enhances the community’s understanding and appreciation of the contributions of older adults.

  2. Volunteer Management

Shankill Day Care Centre, attracts, retains, and effectively utilises older adult volunteers, ensuring they are motivated, skilled, and satisfied with their roles
We use targeted recruitment strategies, including word-of-mouth, local advertisements, and collaborations with retirement groups. We emphasize the meaningful impact volunteers can have, which resonates particularly with older adults looking for purposeful activities.
Providing comprehensive training ensures that volunteers are well-prepared for their roles. This includes orientation sessions, regular workshops, and ongoing support. Training covers practical skills, safety protocols, and soft skills such as communication and empathy.
Regularly recognising and appreciating volunteers is crucial. We hold appreciation events, give out awards, and publicly acknowledge their contributions in newsletters and social media. This fosters a sense of belonging and motivates volunteers to stay engaged. Effective volunteer management ensures that we have a dedicated, skilled, and motivated team of older adult volunteers. This not only enhances the quality of our services but also improves volunteer satisfaction and retention.

  3. Program Innovation

We continuously improve and diversify our services, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of older adults and remain engaging and impactful.
Regularly conducting needs assessments helps us understand the changing needs and preferences of our clients and volunteers. This involves surveys, interviews, and collaboration with local health and social service providers.
Based on the insights gained from needs assessments, we develop new programs and enhance existing ones.
We implement a continuous improvement cycle where programs are regularly evaluated for their effectiveness and impact. This involves collecting data on participation rates, satisfaction levels, and health outcomes. The insights gained are used to make informed adjustments and innovations.
Program innovation ensures our services remain relevant, effective, and engaging. It allows us to adapt to the needs of older adults and continually improve the quality of life for our clients and volunteers.

3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery

  1. Volunteer Recruitment and Retention: Attracting and retaining older adult volunteers is essential for the sustainability of our programs. However, this can be challenging due to various factors such as the availability of potential volunteers, their health, and competing commitments. Finding new volunteers who are willing and able to commit their time can be difficult. Many older adults may face health issues or have other responsibilities, such as caregiving for family members, which limits their availability for volunteering. Keeping volunteers engaged and motivated over the long term requires ongoing effort. Volunteers may experience burnout, health declines, or changes in their personal circumstances that make it difficult to continue volunteering.
  2. Funding and Resource Allocation: Securing sufficient funding and efficiently allocating resources are ongoing challenges that impact our ability to sustain and expand our programs. With limited funding sources and relying on a few key funding sources, such as government grants and donations, can be risky. Fluctuations in funding availability can impact program continuity and quality.
Ensuring that we have the necessary resources, including staff, equipment, and facilities, to support our programs can be challenging, especially when demand for services grows. Maintaining consistent fundraising efforts to support the centre’s activities requires innovative approaches and continual community engagement.
  3. Adapting to Changing Needs and Preferences of Older Adults
The needs and preferences of older adults are continuously evolving, requiring our programs to be adaptable and responsive. As the health status of older adult’s changes, our programs must adapt to provide appropriate support, whether through modified meal options, additional health services, or tailored activities. Catering to a wide range of interests and preferences among our clients can be challenging. Ensuring that our activities and services remain relevant and engaging for all participants requires ongoing innovation.
Increasingly, technology plays a role in service delivery and communication. Ensuring that older adults and volunteers are comfortable and proficient with necessary technologies is crucial.
