Aim of Initiative
To provide a holistic approach to learning that involves computer training in community centre with tea breaks and outings organised to encourage meeting new people and making friends.
Who is it aimed at
All those Over 55 years of age to provide a suitable and sustainable learning environment specifically designed for those attending the clubs.
3 Steps critical to success
- Spreading the information by posters, leaflets, newspapers and radio so those who most need to learn modern technology are made aware of the clubs.
- Being Affordable, Informal and flexible regarding attendance, tutor interaction and follow-up queries.
- Providing the service as directed by the learners themselves.
3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery
- Students self belief they could not learn computers because they had left school early.
- Students self belief that there was no benefit in learning new technology.
- Students had serious concerns regarding cyber security and online fraud.
3 Outcomes / Benefits
- The courses are ran as clubs. They are ongoing with new people joining and others who learnt what they needed to leave. Students can always return anytime and course content is directed by the students of what they would like to learn.
- The students are invested in their own learning as they are covering topics they themselves or their peers want to learn about.
- As it is a club, if something comes up or the students needs a few weeks off for whatever reason they can always return. The classes are mixed ability and students are very willing to help new students or those returning.
