Description
The Monday club membership aged from 65-83 participated in an Active citizenship programme .
The project was funded by the Community Foundation of Ireland. The project was themed over a number of areas including Environment, Mental health, Social inclusion, Transport and community.
The group was facilitated by the Southill FRC and was delivered a professional facilitator who posed questions during the workshops. The biggest areas of concern highlighted was Housing and accessible transport in Southill which has been going through a regeneration process since 2009. Meetings were arranged with NTA locally and with city Council. Nominated reps from the group represented the group with questions to the organisations on the concerns raised.
The group have seen some success with the city council and Cluaid housing upgrading the Apartments for older persons in the community. Issue with transport have been discussed with Bus eireann locally and concerns have been sent by letter to NTA by the group. The group were able to nominate members onto and into local organisations and NGO’s working in the area including the Regeneration committee.

- A clear proposal for the project was agreed when applying for the funding.
- Themed workshops work well with our group
- Professional facilitator who was independent of the grand organisation.
3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery
- Recruiting trained facilitator who was independent and available .
Project agreed for 1 per month over 6 months. - Convincing older persons who have heard it all before that this project would be their Voices and concerns.
- Follow up meeting with NTA.
3 Outcomes / Benefits
- 6 themed workshops took place with 30 older persons participating at each workshop.
- Concerns were documented and plans of action agreed with the group.
- Follow up meetings arranged and attended with Bus eireann, Limerick City and county council and other NGO’s working in the community of Southill
