Description
The aim of the project is to create a safer society for all to live in. It is a collaborative project, headed up by the HSE, it engaged with An Garda Síochana, The Irish Prison Service, victims of crime and Transition Year students from secondary schools. Inside Out is a crime and disability awareness training resource pack that explores the impact of crime on people with disabilities and older people in our communities. Seven victims of crime shared their personal stories and experiences of crime with 12 TY students from secondary schools.
Aim of Initiative
The aim of the Inside Out project is to create a safer society by raising awareness about the impact of crime on vulnerable groups, particularly older people and those with disabilities. This collaborative initiative, involving crime victims, TY students, and women prisoners, uses storytelling and drama to foster empathy and understanding. Inside Out empowers victims, educates the youth, and promotes community engagement, resulting in a practical handbook that serves as an educational resource for schools, youth groups, and the broader community, ultimately enhancing safety and security for all.
Who is it aimed at
The Inside Out initiative is aimed at multiple groups:
1. Crime Victims: Providing a platform for them to share their stories and experiences.
2. Transition Year (TY) Students: Educating and raising awareness about the impact of crime on vulnerable groups.
3. Women Prisoners: Engaging them in therapeutic activities and fostering empathy through drama and storytelling.
4. Schools, Youth Groups, and Community Organizations: Offering educational resources and practical guidance to promote understanding and prevent crime.
5. Law Enforcement and the Broader Community: Enhancing ethical practices and fostering inclusivity and empathy within the community.
3 Steps critical to success
- Storytelling and Engagement: Involving crime victims, TY students, and women prisoners in sharing and dramatizing personal crime experiences to foster empathy and understanding.
- Educational Resource Creation: Developing the Inside Out handbook as a practical guide for schools, youth groups, and community organizations to raise awareness about crime’s impact and promote ethical practices.
- Community and Law Enforcement Support: Garnering endorsement from the Chief Superintendent and engaging the community to ensure broad support and credibility, enhancing the program’s reach and effectiveness.

- Measuring Long-term Impact: Collecting and analysing data to demonstrate the program’s effectiveness and long-term benefits, such as reduced crime rates and improved community safety.
- Engaging Diverse Stakeholders: Effectively involving and coordinating with a wide range of participants, including crime victims, students, prisoners, law enforcement, and community organizations
- Securing Continuous Funding: Ensuring sustained financial support for the program’s activities, resources, and expansion efforts.
