Description
The Friendship Club, which has been active since 1996, is an integral part of the Community. They offer a social outlet in a welcoming environment. A founding member, Teresa Smyth, recently retired from the Committee after 28 years. It is a great place for many new members of the Community who have joined us in their later years to make friends and join an active group. The Friendship Group hosted the children from St. Tola’s NS in December to make Yule Tide Logs. In June, they hosted Crowenstown NS for a day of song, dance and had a “retro sweetshop”. They also host fundraisers through coffee mornings, bake sales, etc.
Aim of Initiative
1. To provide a warm and welcoming place for retired members of the Community, including new members.
2. To share experiences, stories, skills and time with all other groups of the Community, expecially the national schools. They are involved in every aspect of our Community, and while they would never expect recognition for their hard work, they absolutely deserve it.
Who is it aimed at
The initiative is aimed at all Active Age people in Delvin and the surrounding area
3 Steps critical to success
- Its great to have this group in our locality.
- It provides the members of our Active Age Group with a social outlet each month with a chance to meet up with our active members and enjoy the social aspect of these get togethers
- The various activities that we do make the Group interesting and provides information and fun to the group members.
3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery
- Funding for outings and events.
- Volunteers to assist with days out and organising events e.g. Christmas Party and weekend away trips
- How to increase membership as the majority of older people are not familiar with social media and a lot would live in a very rural area. Transport would be an issue for some members as many may not drive.
3 Outcomes / Benefits
- It is good for the members mental health and wellbeing to be a part of our Active Age Group
- The various activities keep our members interested in joining in in the activities. They also are provided with information on various active age initiatives from our local County Council e.g. grants, home support schemes.
- Its great for people who are living on their own to be part of this group as they may avail of the day trips, weekends away, Christmas party and other activities organised by our Group.
