Description
I would like more recognition given countrywide to our many Gaeilge groups throughout Munster and beyond who reach out to all ages, but particularly retired people to meet regularly and chat as Gaeilge. I have set up various groups and I have published an Irish weekly article (since 2001), aimed at this cohort of people who just love to have that opportunity to meet and revive the Irish, they learnt at school and indeed to learn a few more ‘forgotten’ seanfhocail’. This is a great social occasion for many groups who look forward to meeting for the cuppa, scéalta nua and to hear about cultural events that include book launches, music , poetry etc., We don’t hear enough about these vibrant conversation circles, who invite bilingual participants of course, Céad Mílle fáilte to one and all…
Aim of Initiative
Social interaction and a welcome to those who love to do what they can to keep the Cúpla focal alive in Communities, especially among our senior members
Who is it aimed at
Welcome to all but we notice special appreciation from folk of “the old school” and retired
3 Steps critical to success
- Find a venue, not easy when we started with little funding
- Get word out and gather interested clientelle
- Consider members interests and going on that, organise events to keep members in attendance
3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery
- Awakening interest
- Calling in the troops! organise a few “Start-up” meetings
- Introduce the idea to other Communities and encourage them follow our strategy
3 Outcomes / Benefits
- The joy and satisfaction that folk get in a friendly gathering of people who seek out opportunities to speak the native tongue, also the culrural activities that arise from meetings
- We hear hourly of the advance of dreaded Alzeimers , these chatty circles benefit those whose families have left the ‘nest’ and keep their thinking brains alert, new words, new ideas galore shared
- We encourage reading, writing and participation in social events ,thus aiding and keeping in touch with Foras Na Gaeilge and other Irish organisations as well
