Comfort Knitted Blankets

Description

The Age Active Group love to crochet and knit blankets and patchwork quilts. They get great satisfaction with the end results and even more satisfaction when they see the smile on the faces of the people and children with disabilities when they receive their blanket. It is a great way to keep our seniors active without realizing it.

Aim of Initiative

Our aim is too try and ensure that everyone in the local Community and surrounding areas, together with the Irish Wheelchair Association receive a blanket depending on their needs.

Who is it aimed at

The initiative is aimed at everyone in our Community, from the very young to the active age.

3 Steps critical to success

1. Members of our Age Friendly Group willing to participate in the knitting of our wool squares and availability of materials to create our comfort blankets
2. Logistical and financial support to enable our Group purchase materials and also to drop off the finished blankets.
3. Availability of local venue to provide a place to meet, knit, chat and have refreshments

3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery

1. Cost of products – good quality wool is expensive to buy, so we try and source from charity shops
2. Availability of Community Centre at times that suit all our active age members
3. Ensuring that blankets reach those who need them most

3 Outcomes / Benefits

1. Great for local active age members to meet in our local Centre, work together as a team to create such colourful blankets
2. The joy expressed by the people who receive our comfort blankets
3. We reuse items that help to create the blankets, zips, buttons and wool. We try and source our materials locally and in local charity shops
