Description
Tovertafel linked with iPads, laptops and other technology to create an inclusive community where cognitive stimulation is increased to support people actively living with Dementia within County Mayo. The use of technology creates spaces where a history of the Club Member (Service User has a stigmatic way to describe a person) can be utilised to gain entry into their lives past, present and future to guide the staff to method the best support plan possible. A better understanding of who the club member is and were prior to their diagnosis. We see the person not the condition.
Aim of Initiative
To create safe spaces inside and outside FACT Social Club where people actively living in our community to feel included. To support families to understand that technology can be used not only within the Social Club but at home to also create awareness that the person can still interact very well with the right supports in place.
Who is it aimed at
It is aimed at people with a diagnosis of Dementia but also to educate staff, families and carers. We have also approached the local library’s and county library to encourage spaces where inclusion is seen not just conversations that gather no traction.
3 Steps critical to success
- Education on how to use the toverfafel (magic table) to the best of its ability
- Training staff to reflect on change, to ensure all avenues are explored and that not every plan will support each individual
- Implementation of step 1 and 2
3 Challenges in Planning / Delivery
- Creating a space that was safe and felt like a home away from home
- Concentration from club members and finding the right games to get each individual to focus
- Ensuring inclusion meant everyone at the table was enjoying the interactive support and it wasn’t a one fit for everyone.
3 Outcomes / Benefits
- Overall adventure for club members when using the toverfafel.
It not only supports learning but also dexterity, excercise, brain function, movement, interaction and conversation - The technology also shows a competitive side of people with dementia. They are willing to learn to improve for higher scores but also to empower them to remember what being part of a team felt like.
- Inclusion, that each individual matters.
