Older people do not stop contributing to their communities on retirement. Many continue in important unpaid and voluntary roles for their families and communities. Economic circumstances may require older people to continue in paid work while others would like to continue working and many, in fact, do so. New flexible ways of working will be required to support older people’s workforce participation.
An age-friendly community provides ways older people can, if they choose, continue to work for pay, volunteer their skills and be actively engaged in community life. Evidence shows doing so increases social contact and good health.
Many older people want to be involved in decision-making processes, and to inform and influence government planning and policies. Lifelong learning enables older people to update skills and knowledge plus continue to be involved in the issues that are important to them.
