Why should I consider participating?

Our research shows that older customers tend to be loyal customers, with purchasing power and the time and inclination to shop locally. Age Friendly businesses will appeal to this type of customer.

Participating businesses have experienced increased footfall and higher turnover. By advertising yourself as an Age Friendly Business, you are letting older people know that you value their custom and you are committed to serving them. Crucially we have found word of mouth is important with older customers telling their friends and family about businesses they enjoy visiting and spending money in.

How do I join?

What type of businesses should get involved?

From experience the AFB is an excellent fit with a large number of businesses. Participating businesses have included: Butchers, Hairdressers, Financial Services (Banks, Credit Union’s), Clothing Shops, Gyms, Hotels, Restaurants and Bars for example.

What is involved in the Workshop and what do participants gain?

It is a two hour workshop and generally held after 5pm to suit businesses, participants will;

• Learn about the programme itself
• Gain an insight into the older consumer  – behaviours likes/dislikes
• Learn what impact older customers have on a business and community
• Think about how they can engage and talk to their older customers
• Think about three actions – practical realistic and appropriate that will help make their business more Age Friendly.

What does the Age Friendly Champion do?

The AF Champion role is to talk to the business owner and colleagues and lead the way in terms of engaging and talking with older customers. Based on these conversations the champion will identify three suitable actions

Is it expensive to Implement Actions?

Our experience has shown us that is relatively easy to make your business age friendly. Most age friendly practices are low or zero cost and can mean a big difference in your bottom line. Simple changes such as making your business easier to find, enter, move around in and make purchases in are good for your customers and better for your business.

How does a Business get Recognised? 

The Charter presentation event is where participating businesses get ‘recognised’ as being an Age Friendly business. Participating businesses, older people, other guests and local press/radio are invited to this event. Businesses will receive their charter and window sticker. This recognition allows customers to identify you as an age friendly business and publicises your business to older consumers.
